Tropical Julep

TROPICAL JULEP

  • 1½ oz. / 45 ml. cognac

  • ½ oz. / 15 ml. funky Jamaican rum

  • ¼ oz. / 7.5 ml. pineapple gum syrup

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 8–10 mint leaves

  • powdered sugar to sprinkle on top

METHOD
add mint to glass and gently press against sides to release oils / add remaining ingredients and pack with crushed or pebble ice / stir until cup is frosted / top with more ice to create a dome / garnish with a bouquet of mint and sprinkle of powdered sugar

ABOUT
This mint julep riff is by Barlow Gilmore (@theweekendmixologist). I have heard the julep be described as the bright and refreshing cousin to the old fashioned. Here, we take that to the tropics by swapping out whiskey for cognac and a high ester rum and adding pineapple. Cheers y’all!
